I’m a big believer in setting goals – and then putting them in a place where you can regularly review them. I am also instilling this in my children so that they learn from a young age that you need to be purposeful with your life.
‘If you aim at nothing, you’ll hit it every time’ goes the saying. And it’s so true. For many, Groundhog Day is much more than a fictitous movie; it is life imitating art.
Surfing is by far my favorite sport, and I try and ensure I am in the water two to three times per week. I came across this fantastic Instagram post earlier this week that so depicts the power of putting your dream in front of you.
Seth Moniz is a young Hawaiian surfer who late last year qualified for the World Championship Tour (WCT). As you’ll see from the post below, when he was a young boy, his dad framed a photo of his son surfing with the words ‘My long term goal is to make the WCT’ above it.
How powerful. Imagine that young boy playing in his room or going off to sleep at night seeing his goal right in front of him. Day after day, week after week, year after year. Now, years later, his dream has come true.
For anyone who reads any of my articles, you’ll quickly find out that I believe we serve a God that wants the best for us. That doesn’t mean we’ll all live our ‘best life’ on earth. For many of us, not even close. Trials and tribulations will come our way, meaning many of us bear much pain in our lives, but that des not mean that we give up on our dreams. We don’t stop trying because hardship comes our way.
That’s exactly what the enemy wants each of us to do. God births the dream, we get excited, we step out, and then we get ‘shot at’. His aim is to shoot at you often enough and hard enough, especially early on when you don’t have that confidence that you can in fact do it, that you give up, meaning you miss your life and God calling.
I can tell you that in my early years of business, I could feel that force just trying so hard to take me down. I was getting debilitating migraines once every couple of weeks, I was under so much pressure that I at times had a mouth full of ulcers, but I knew that if I resisted the devil, that I would breakthrough to something incredible that God had placed on my life: building a global Christian media company to make his name famous all over the world.
It took many, many years of hardship and strain, and if I didn’t have God right by me encouraging me and guiding me, I would have given up years ago. In fact the book I launched last year, NOT Business As Usual, details the journey. But that is the power of a goal and a dream: when you can see it everyday, it empowers you to keep going, even when you want to give up.
As they say, ‘you gotta’ keep the dream alive’. That’s why so few people get to where they dream of, because they give up too early. So no matter what age you are, I encourage you to set your goals, and then set sail…
Then the Lord answered me and said, “Write the vision And engrave it plainly on [clay] tablets So that the one who reads it will run.
